Canon: Marvel Comics (616)
Character: (The Superior) Spider-Man - Otto Octavius/Peter Parker
Timeline: Superior Spider-Man #14
Personality:
Intellect and pride, when mixed together, becomes easily the most volatile combination of personality traits; at times, they blend so seemlessly into one, so easily paired as if they belong, yet the cocktail itself is horrendously poisonous. Far worse, the more one has of each of these attributes, the more powerful the result can be, and it is in the case of one Otto Octavius that the level of genius and ego reach astronomical levels. However, it is that same intelligence that is his saving grace - no matter how audacious this man has been, he is simply too smart not to learn from his past mistakes.
Undoubtedly, Otto is smart. He values intelligence and the accomplishments it brings above all things, and appropriately shows nothing but disdain for anyone who behaves otherwise - friend or foe alike. As a child, he was abused by his thickheaded father, and he was bullied by his classmates for his success in school AND his lack of physical ability - because of these things, he swore to rise above, to use his mind and never stoop to the same petty level as his tormentors. So he plans, he thinks, he 'schemes' even, developing new ways to achieve success, and takes no small amount of pleasure in seeing his ideas blossom. In his role as Spider-Man, Otto prefers not to suffer needlessly through pointless fights, as he will devise strategies and counter-measures in order to minimize any losses, from setting traps to devising methods to overcome any weakness or vulnerability. He is also a scientist, studying all elements (including other people) to discern their value, and is always interested in finding something new to examine.
His methods are not simply in concept alone, however; not one to sit idle and only plan, Otto values hard work as well. First and foremost, he has a great passion for inventing - the WHOLE process, from simple concept through building, working, and welding, all the way through the final stage of testing and deployment. He is most definitely not above getting his hands dirty, and likely feels most at home with tools in his hands. He builds all of his own inventions from the ground up, and has been known to chug copious amounts of coffee in order to stay up and complete his work through long, lonely nights, all because he enjoys the satisfaction of seeing his genius coming to life. Secondly, even as a villain, he never hid behind lackies; Otto was always part of the fight, and now that he acts as a hero, he has no desire to shirk his duties, staying active and ready at all times to fight. He may prefer to plan things out first, but when the time comes, he knows that it requires physical ability as well to get the job done. Being Spider-Man certainly comes with perks: in his body, Otto is stronger, faster, and more agile than he ever would have dreamed, and he seems to love it.
When it comes to pride, this is where Otto starts to go horribly wrong. It's a rather common issue, though - a person of great talent starts to get a little full of themselves. While he has certainly mellowed out from his days as a super villain, he still has a bad tendency to act in a condescending fashion. He touts his own abilities, firstly: very few people come close to matching his intelligence, and he will let you know this. Frequently. Oh, and if you happen to doubt his abilities or 'forget' to acknowledge what he is capable of building or working on, he will be sure to point out your mistake. Secondly, he doesn't always play well with others - Otto still has some trouble accepting help from other people, and anyone he has not learned to trust may not be considered as a viable asset. Lastly, Octavius has almost no sense of humor for things - endlessly serious, he loathes being teased by 'common' people, and heaven help you if you were to offend his sensibilities or manage to humiliate him.
If an upside exists, perhaps it could be said that his sense of pride is a driving force in his life: it pushes him to achieve, if only so that he continues to win and others continue to lose; it urges him to be a bit of a perfectionist, to think through every angle and consider every possible outcome; it necessitates that he continue to learn new skills and abilities to stay ahead of the game. Otto's pride also makes him a bit of a culture connoisseur, prompting a heavy knowledge of fine arts, music, wine, and he is typically a perfect, old-fashioned gentlemen when it comes to dealing with people - he speaks in a very formal manner and carries himself upright.
Background: http://marvel.wikia.com/Otto_Octavius_%28Earth-616%29
Otto Octavius, formerly 'Doctor Octopus', was one of Spider-Man's most persistent villains. Highly intelligent, yet warped by a terrible laboratory accident, his storied career as an enemy has suddenly been overshadowed by an incredible victory - taking the place of his former nemesis, he has assimilated the life of Peter Parker and acts in his stead as a hero and protector of New York City.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
*Super Strength - capable of lifting approximately 20 tons.
*Enhanced Agility - able to run and leap with incredible speed and dexerity
*'Spider-Sense' - a strange 'early-warning' sense, bordering on precognition, that alerts him to potential harm
*Wall-Crawling - can adhere to nearly any surface by contact with his hands and feet.
Otto is also a highly-educated individual; though he specializes in engineering and physics, he is equally capable when it comes to chemistry, biology, and even general medicine and physiology. Not only can he build just about anything, he can even perform brain surgery!
Octavius also has some degree of psychic resistance. He is generally immune to weaker probes, as he has trained his mind to block out most intrusions.
Spider-Man will bring with him:
*His costume: powered by a small electric fuel cell - features HUD scanning lenses, facial recognition/interpretation software, and frequency connectivity with compatible signals; small 'talons' in his gloves also feature tracking nanites that can be injected on contact; wrist-mounted web-shooters, with limited refill capsules; four retractable spider-arms
*Ten Spider-Bots; these handy little mobile creatures can be remotely guided and feed video information to their controller. They feature a long-lasting power supply, but are small, fragile, and generally unable to defend themselves. They can be easily reconfigured to perform different tasks.
*Compact tool set
First-Person Sample:
[As usual, before he sends out any message, Octavius applies a heavy dose of encryption that prevents any tracking or tampering. If he's anything, he's cautious.]
I've been closely monitoring the Inner City lately. If this is the cause of our being here, the source of the time-space disturbance and the source of the Animus, then naturally, it needs to be studied.
I would much prefer to simply enter and investigate, but because many of you have provided ample warning to do just the opposite, I have decided to err on the side of caution. For now.
However, some scrutiny applied to the perimeter has been just enough to temporarily satisfy me. Its defenses and any movement, specifically. If you happen to see me moving around the barrier in such a way, I would request that I not be bothered. This is all part of a larger plan, of course, because I will be going inside there eventually.
Third-Person Sample:
People deal with routine in different ways. The give it different names, primarily: it is often either a 'schedule', a way to provide structure, or; it is 'tedium', a lack of excitement and a dull way to live. For Spider-Man - the 'Superior' model - following a routine was simply thought of as 'necessary'. Today was a routine example of observation, a completely cardinal piece of an experiment. Rising early from his little lair, Octavius had gathered up his supplies in a makeshift knapsack, then quickly started off towards the center of the city, darting from ruined rooftop to ruined rooftop towards those towering walls. This wasn't the first time he had done this, either - according to his meticulously-kept logs, this was the fifth, and every time, he had scouted out a different portion of the barrier.
There was certainly nothing exciting about it. For hours at a time, he would find a secure, shaded spot a healthy distance away, then wait and watch. He would make detailed notes about any security measures, noting the angles and range as his lenses focused in on their design, and he would observe how they reacted to any stimuli, from wandering beasts to tests conducted by his trusty little Spider-Bots. He would also take along some water and food, occasionally taking a short break from his investigation to sit and relax, to answer any messages or send out a few of his own.
Everywhere he moved, he would do it quickly and quietly. Running along the crumbled remains of homes and structures, he would make swift, flying leaps, his lean muscles tensing and shooting like coiled steel springs. With fists clenched, he ducked in and out of cover whenever possible, hoping to stay out of sight as much he could, and occasionally turned his head to glance at the wall, checking for signs of danger.
On this particular day, though, there was one tiny bit of excitement as Otto approached his latest choice of monitoring stations; this sort of thing was bound to happen eventually, too, as he frequented abandoned areas of the city so often. Passing a rather distasteful statue along his route, Spider-Man suddenly stopped in place, dropping out of his brisk pace when he was alerted to the presence of something...unpleasant nearby.
But...there was nothing. No animals, no insects, and no monsters approaching. No guns trained on him, and as far as he could tell, no eyes watching. As he trained his head around, he could near nothing moving, and the area was as still as a graveyard (and just as scenic). Beneath his mask, Otto's brow furrowed, signaling his concern - not being able to observe something was particularly unpleasant for a scientist, but he had learned to never second-guess his Spider-Sense. He stood ready, arms coiled and extended out defensively, legs ready to jump at any moment. But again, nothing.
So he started to move again, starting into a walk, but there it was again: alarms going off in his head, his eyes growing wide and his heart picking up in speed. Right back into that anticipating stance, he began to search for the source again, but there was still nothing! It was infuriating, causing him to grind his teeth! He had to keep his wits sharp, though; can't let his emotions get the better of him. Start making a plan.
"What kind of ridiculous joke is this?" he muttered aloud, starting to walk forward as he fumed. Just as predicted, his instincts flared up again, but this time, he kept right on going in the same direction. Not looking around, not making any sudden movements, he kept his eyes straight ahead and...waited.
Wait. Not yet. Not yet...wait...
NOW.
Spider-Man turned, spinning on his heels with incredible precision, and rammed his fist straight into the face of a Mimic, its painted expressions twisted and mocking. He struck it with all of his strength, sending it reeling backwards with its clowny visage literally crumpled inward like a crushed aluminum can. As it slammed into the ground, twitching, Otto had already fired a thick stream of his webbing, effectively trapping it in place like hardened cement. There, he approached it, looking down on the creature with a condemning, predatory stare.
"If these things weren't so damned absurd, I would be tempted to study them," he stated, watching as it struggled. He raised a foot off of the ground, then planted his boot squarely through the Mimic's skull with one quick thrust.
"I have better things to do."
